The fighting may have stopped in much of Afghanistan but the actions of the gunmen still dominate many aspects of Afghans’ lives. Commanders are the de facto rulers or large areas of the country; some of them are among the Afghanistan’s most powerful and wealthy men, others are village thugs. Either way, their abuses of power, backed by the threat and use of violence, have a devastating effect on life here.
